Gram’s Wisdom 55
How does attitude play out in our lives?
Our Lives are made up of a lot of bits and bobs joined together. One of those pieces is attitude. Gram believed our attitude is a major influence on how far we’ll get in life. She thought it was an essential part of who we are.
Gram told me that the most essential fact about attitude is our ability to choose. No matter our skillset or field of expertise, an optimistic attitude helps us get over the finish line. In contrast, choosing a pessimistic attitude can force us into a world of unhappiness and self-pity.

What is attitude?
According to Harvard psychologist William James, attitude isn’t something that happens to you. Instead, you get to choose how you perceive the events and people in your life.
He says, “Human beings, by changing the inner attitude of their minds, can change the outer aspect.”
Attitude is your reaction to things happening in your life and the people in it. Your attitude refers to an outlook or disposition towards something or someone, reflecting your beliefs, emotions, and behaviors. It further encompasses a complex blend of thoughts, feelings, and actions that shape your approach to various situations. Attitude ranges from positive to negative, influencing your perception of the world.
Attitude often manifests in your body language, tone of voice, and verbal communication, providing insights into an underlying mindset. Attitude plays a vital role in shaping personal relationships, professional success, and overall well-being. It impacts how you approach opportunities, overcome obstacles, and navigate life's ups and downs.
Can I change my attitude?
Changing your attitude is a transformative process that significantly impacts your life. The best way to do that is, to begin with your self-talk. By default, self-talk tends to lean towards the negative. Most people are critical of their choices, find fault with their actions, and belittle their feelings.
Instead, be in the habit of showing yourself more support and empathy. By trading in a few negative thoughts with more positive ones, you’ll trigger more positive feelings. With a little discipline, you can train your mind to be more positive and encouraging.
Remember, changing your attitude is within your control. By implementing the strategies below and staying committed to personal growth, you can develop a more positive and constructive attitude.
Self-reflection.
Take some time to reflect on your present attitude and identify any negative patterns or beliefs that may be holding you back. Recognize the areas where you'd like to see improvement and identify why a change in attitude is necessary.
Positive affirmations.
Integrate positive affirmations into your daily routine. Repeat empowering statements that reflect the attitude you aspire to have. For example, "I am capable of overcoming challenges" or "I approach every situation with optimism and enthusiasm." These affirmations can help rewire your subconscious mind and reinforce positive thinking.
Surround yourself with positivity.
Surround yourself with people who radiate positivity and support your desire for change. Participate in activities that uplift your spirits and expose yourself to inspiring content such as books, podcasts, or motivational talks. This will help reinforce a positive mindset.
Practice gratitude.
Cultivate a habit of gratitude by acknowledging and appreciating the good things in your life. Take time each day to reflect on the blessings, big or small, and express gratitude for them. This practice helps shift your focus from negativity to positivity and supports a more optimistic attitude.
Challenges can be opportunities.
Instead of viewing challenges as barriers, reframe them as opportunities for growth. Adopt a mindset that sees setbacks as valuable learning experiences, allowing you to develop resilience and problem-solving skills.
Small steps towards change.
Changing your attitude is a gradual process, so be patient with yourself. Begin by adopting small changes in your daily life and gradually build upon them. Celebrate each step forward and acknowledge the progress you've made. This approach will help you maintain long-term positive change.
You have a purpose.
Your life plan needn’t be 5 years in advance. If you have a positive attitude, you’ll live a life with purpose. Plus, everything you do will be to serve and feed that purpose. You’ll also be aware of how you affect those around you. That sense of motivation will help keep you going, even in the toughest times.
Forgive others.
Often, people do or say things without realizing they’ve hurt you. You can’t control them, so why waste your time harboring grudges? Instead, focus on what you can control: your attitude. Having a positive attitude means learning to forgive those who wrong you. Forgiveness is about giving you peace of mind. It isn’t about letting another person off the hook.
Be an action taker.
Many times, we put off doing something or making a decision. Fear and panic turn into anxiety, which leads to procrastination. The best way around this is to just do it! Then, let go of all your self-doubts. Worrying wastes time and doesn’t get you anywhere. So, take a deep breath and jump in! You have a 50/50 chance of things going your way. And if they don’t? You’ll have learned a life lesson, which will mold you into a stronger, wiser human being.
How your attitude impacts your life.
Henry Ford said, “You always have a choice, even if it is only a choice of your attitude.”
First, your attitude greatly influences your motivation, productivity, and overall success. When you maintain a positive attitude, you tend to approach tasks with passion and determination. This mindset energizes your motivation, pushing you to work harder and persevere through challenges. Consequently, your productivity increases as you maintain focus, remain solution-oriented and stay committed to your goals. In both personal and professional spheres, a positive attitude becomes a catalyst for achievement.
Second, a negative attitude can delay progress and breed more negativity. When you bring a pessimistic outlook to what you see, it becomes difficult to find motivation. You see only the challenges and none of the opportunities. This mindset limits your potential and often leads to self-doubt, as you underrate your abilities and succumb to fear. Moreover, a negative attitude can strain relationships, as constant negativity drains the enthusiasm of those around you and creates a toxic atmosphere. It becomes difficult to collaborate effectively or maintain healthy connections when negativity poisons your interactions.
As you can see, the enormous influence of your attitude is empowering. It allows you to intentionally choose a mindset that aligns with your aspirations and values. By cultivating a positive attitude, you can shape your experiences, relationships, and overall well-being. You become resilient in the face of adversity, find silver linings in difficult situations, and navigate through life's challenges with grace.
My final thoughts are.
I hope you have a better understanding of your attitude, now that you’ve read how it can shape your life. Attitudes aren’t just pulled from the air on an as-needed basis. They’re formed over time through your life experiences, thoughts, and emotions. In short, how you feel, think, and behave determines your attitude.
